How to care for your designer bag
This is how your pre-owned designer bag stays in top condition
A designer bag is more than a fashion accessory. It's a timeless item that can bring joy for years and, depending on the brand and model, can even increase in value. With the right care, your pre-owned or vintage designer bag will not only remain beautiful, but will also retain its quality and exclusive appearance for longer. A well-maintained bag can therefore be proudly passed on to the next generation.
At Purse Curse, we believe that good maintenance is just as important as a careful purchase. That's why we share the care tips and products that we ourselves use for vintage and pre-owned designer bags from brands such as Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Dior, Gucci, and Prada. By cleaning, protecting, and storing your bag correctly, you significantly extend its lifespan.
Whether you own a Chanel classic flap bag, Louis Vuitton Ellipse, Dior saddle bag, or another vintage designer bag, with the right care, the leather will remain supple, metal details will retain their shine, and your bag will remain a valuable possession for years to come. This way, not only will you enjoy your investment, but it can eventually be lovingly passed on to a new generation.

Frequently asked questions
Maintenance and care
Depending on usage, we recommend nourishing a designer bag once or twice a year with a conditioning leather conditioner. We always use Cadillac boot & shoe leather lotion ourselves.
At Purse Curse, we like to use Cadillac Boot & Shoe Leather Lotion for many types of smooth leather. This wax-free leather conditioner is a popular choice among enthusiasts and specialists for caring for Chanel lambskin and Chanel caviar leather, among others. The lotion nourishes the leather, helps prevent drying and minor dry cracks, and maintains the leather's natural appearance. This keeps a vintage or pre-owned designer bag supple, beautiful, and in excellent condition for longer. As with any maintenance product, we advise always testing the product first on a small, inconspicuous area and following the maintenance instructions of the brand concerned.
Louis Vuitton monogram canvas and Damier canvas do not need leather conditioner. These materials have a protective coating and therefore do not need to be nourished like smooth leather. Clean the canvas with a soft, slightly damp microfiber cloth and then dry it carefully.
Please note that the Vachetta leather details such as handles, straps, and trimmings on many Louis Vuitton bags may require maintenance. Use a suitable leather conditioner for this, such as Cadillac Boot & Shoe Leather Lotion. Always test it first on an inconspicuous area, as Vachetta develops a natural patina over time and may darken slightly with conditioning.
To keep your designer bag looking beautiful for as long as possible, always store it in a dustbag, out of direct sunlight and in a cool, dry place. This protects the leather from discolouration, drying out and unnecessary wear and tear.
Preferably use a bag pillow to lightly stuff the bag. This helps the bag retain its original shape and prevents the leather from sagging or creasing over time. Don't have a bag pillow? You can also carefully stuff the bag with acid-free tissue paper or folded bubble wrap. Do not use newspaper, as the ink can transfer.
Purse Curse tip: always store your designer bag empty and make sure that chains, handles and shoulder straps do not press against the leather for long periods. This will keep your pre-owned or vintage designer bag in top condition for years to come.
It is wise to avoid prolonged exposure to rain and moisture as much as possible. Although many designer bags can withstand a small splash of rain, water and moisture can damage the leather or cause stains over time.
Did your bag get wet anyway? Gently dab the moisture dry with a clean, soft microfiber cloth. Then let the bag air dry naturally at room temperature. Never use a hairdryer, heater, or direct sunlight to speed up the drying process, as this can dry out or deform the leather.
With Louis Vuitton monogram canvas and Damier canvas, the canvas itself is very resistant to moisture, but the Vachetta leather details are more sensitive to water and can develop permanent stains or dark discoloration. Extra caution is therefore advised.
Purse Curse tip: If your designer bag has become soaked or has stubborn water or moisture stains, it is best to have the bag assessed by a specialized designer bag spa before using cleaning products yourself.
Leather is a natural material that loses moisture and natural oils over time. Without proper care, the leather can dry out, becoming stiff and losing its luster, or even developing small dry cracks.
Prevent dehydration by keeping your designer bag out of direct sunlight, heat sources, and damp areas. Additionally, use a high-quality leather conditioner suitable for the specific type of leather once or twice a year.
At Purse Curse, we like to use Cadillac boot & shoe leather lotion for many smooth leathers. Thanks to its wax-free formula, this leather conditioner nourishes the leather without leaving a greasy residue. It helps keep the leather supple and contributes to maintaining the natural appearance of, among others, Chanel lambskin, Chanel caviar, Louis Vuitton Epi, and other high-quality smooth leathers.
Purse Curse tip: use leather conditioner sparingly. A thin layer is sufficient. Too much product can attract dirt or unnecessarily saturate the leather. Always test a maintenance product first on a small, inconspicuous area.
